What cities have the best alternative music scene?

I'm going off to college soon and i would really like to live somewhere with a good music scene where alot of large bands visit. My favorite bands are aiden, alesana, my chemical romance, the used, and afi. But i don't want to go to far from new york state (like ten hours away would be preferable) I was mainly thinking about chicago or possibly detroit but i'm curious for more opinions
