Organizational Computer Program?

I'm going to be starting a project with a local cemetery and it includes entering their records into a computer. I'm just not sure what program I should use. There are thousands of names and several different ways of organizing them, so Excel is out of the question. Does anyone know of a computer program that would be able to sort all of the information once I enter it in?
